Popcorn ceiling removal usually takes 1–2 days for a typical bedroom and 3–5 working days for a home of about 1,500 sq ft. Add about 3–5 business days before work starts if the ceiling needs an asbestos lab test.

Most of that time is not scraping. It is protection, repair, skim coating and drying. This guide breaks down each stage so you can plan around it.

Popcorn Removal Timeline at a Glance

Here is how a typical job flows from first call to final walkthrough. Times are typical ranges, not promises, since every home is different.

Stage What happens Typical time
Quote We measure, inspect and give a written quote We reply within one business day
Asbestos test Small sample sent to an NVLAP-accredited lab About 3–5 business days (rush available)
Protect and contain Floors covered, walls taped, plastic up, vents sealed Part of day one
Mist and scrape Texture wetted and scraped with dust control Part of day one for most rooms
Repair and skim coat Seams fixed, full skim coat applied One or more days with drying
Sand, prime and paint Surface sanded, primed and painted Final day or days
Cleanup HEPA-vacuum cleanup and walkthrough End of the job

For a single bedroom, those working stages usually fit in 1–2 days. For a home of about 1,500 sq ft, they usually take 3–5 working days.

Before Work Starts: Quote and Asbestos Test

The first step is a free written quote. We measure the ceilings, note height and condition, and take a small sample if testing is needed. We reply within one business day.

Many ceilings applied before the mid-1980s can contain asbestos. Only a lab test can tell. Results take about 3–5 business days, with rush available if you are on a deadline.

If the result is positive, we stop and refer you to a Florida-licensed asbestos abatement contractor. We do not remove asbestos. Our popcorn ceiling asbestos testing page explains the process.

What Happens Each Working Day

Day one: protect, contain and scrape

We start by covering floors and taping walls. Plastic containment goes up, and HVAC vents are sealed. This step keeps dust and debris in the work area.

Then we mist the texture with water to soften it and keep dust down. Once it softens, we scrape it off. Unpainted popcorn usually comes off quickly at this stage.

Middle days: repair and skim coat

Scraping exposes seams, tape lines and small damage. We repair those first. Then we apply a skim coat over the full ceiling for a smooth Level 5 finish.

Joint compound needs time to dry between coats. Drying is often the longest part of the job. Florida humidity can slow it, so we plan for that.

Final day: sand, prime, paint and clean

Once the skim coat is dry, we sand it flat. We prime the ceiling, then paint it if painting is in your scope. We finish with a HEPA-vacuum cleanup and a walkthrough with you.

What Can Make It Take Longer

Some ceilings take more time than others. These are the most common reasons a job runs toward the longer end of a range.

  • Painted-over popcorn: paint seals the texture, so it does not soften easily with water
  • High or vaulted ceilings: more setup, ladders or scaffolding, and slower work overhead
  • Damage under the texture: water stains, cracks or loose tape need extra repair
  • Humidity: compound and paint dry slower in damp air
  • Furniture and access: full rooms take longer to protect and work around
  • Choosing knockdown instead of smooth: a knockdown ceiling texture changes the finishing steps

Painted popcorn and higher ceilings also affect price. Painted-over popcorn adds about 25%, and high or vaulted ceilings add more. See the popcorn ceiling removal cost guide for details.

Can You Stay Home During the Work?

Yes. Homeowners can stay home during popcorn removal. You just cannot use the rooms being worked on that day.

We can often plan the job so you keep access to a kitchen, a bath and a place to sleep. Tell us your daily routine when we quote. We can sequence rooms to keep the disruption manageable.

Removal Timeline FAQs

How long does it take to remove popcorn from one room?

A typical bedroom takes 1–2 days from setup to final cleanup. That includes protecting the room, scraping, repairs, skim coating, sanding and priming. Painted-over texture, high ceilings or damage can push it toward the longer end. If the ceiling needs an asbestos test, results take about 3–5 business days before work starts.

Why does a whole house take several days if scraping is fast?

Scraping is only one step. The skim coat and repairs need drying time between coats, and the ceiling must be sanded, primed and painted after that. Protection and cleanup also take time in each room. For a home of about 1,500 sq ft, the full process usually takes 3–5 working days.

Can you rush a popcorn removal job before a move or sale?

We can help you plan around a deadline. Rush lab testing is available if you need asbestos results sooner. Drying time for compound and paint cannot be skipped without hurting the finish, so build in a buffer. Get a free quote early and tell us your target date.
